Estimating Costs

Cost information for asphalt paving items varies greatly from year to year and from project to project. Costs vary based on mobilization costs, quantities, local conditions, and oil prices. The Mn/DOT Pre-letting Services Section can provide engineering cost data and estimating information.

The Mn/DOT Bituminous Office developed the following table listing cost prices from the 1998, 1999, and 2000 construction season. Contact the Mn/DOT Bituminous Engineer at (651) 779-5592 for assistance with estimates for asphalt materials and mixtures, or visit the Bituminous Office web site.

Estimating Quantities

When different mix designations are used on a project for the same course (i.e. wearing, leveling, base) the mixes are normally paid for under one pay item.

For example: a project may have different base course designations (31BBB35000B) and
(31BBB50000B). Normally these two mix designations are paid for under one pay item such as Type 31 Base Course Mixture.

When different mix designations are used, the contractor needs the quantity for both mixes. If there is a difference in mix designations (i.e. aggregate size, number of blows, crushing requirements), show separate quantities. This can be accomplished several different ways within the plan. The ideal way is to split the mixes up within the bituminous tabulations. Or, the pay item could be subnoted on the estimate sheet. For the example above, the pay item Type 31 Base Course Mixture could be subnoted as follows:

The item includes 90.719 tons (100 tons) of (31BBB35000B) and 108.862 tons (120 tons) of (31BBB50000B).

Regardless of the method used, use only one pay item per course and type with the mix designations noted somewhere within the plan.
